About Graham

As a full-time freelance writer with over 500 published articles since 1998, my great delight is researching diverse topics and spinning them into stories for a curious and intelligent general public readership. It’s mostly creative non-fiction, with specialties in archaeology/heritage, business, and aviation.

A PhD in archaeology from University College London, England along with field research in Belize, the Canadian High Arctic, Greece, Turkey and Pakistan and a post-doctoral fellowship at the British School at Athens fuels my passion for archaeology and heritage writing. Features have appeared in Aramco World, Americas Magazine, National Geographic World, Canadian Geographic, Muse, and many more.

Before the archaeology career, an MBA from the University of Alberta spurred me on to ten successful years marketing and managing corporate finance relationships in the energy sector. Starting in Calgary, I went on to Denver and Houston, achieving the position of Vice President—setting a solid foundation for the business writing specialty. As well as magazine features, I produce reader-friendly corporate material: speeches, newsletter stories, advertorials, public reports, booklets, and white papers. Clients have included the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Suncor Energy, Devon Energy, Schlumberger, and Shell Canada.

Aviation writing is powered by graduation from the US Naval Test Pilot School and ten years of aerospace engineering and flight test experience gained during my air force career. Aviation features have been published in Air & Space / Smithsonian, Private Pilot, Skies Magazine, and others.

But these specialties have outliers too—the Graham Chandler byline has appeared on features ranging from birdwatching to ballet to barging down the Mackenzie River.

My features have earned some awards along the way, like three Kenneth R. Wilson Memorial Gold Awards from the Canadian Business Press, the 2004 Silver Award from the Society of National Association Publications for Best Magazine Feature Article, and the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Petroleum History Society.

As well as a burning curiosity about the world, memberships in the Professional Writers Association of Canada, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Canadian Aviation Historical Society, Society of American Archaeology, European Association of South Asian Archaeologists, and a Fellowship in the Royal Asiatic Society have kept creative new story ideas and techniques flowing to my editors and clients.
